Testing rocks

Today we tested different stones because as a Petrologist (rock scientist), we need to be able to identify what rocks we have found by testing them, as well as by observing the markings on them.

Our tests involved:
The hardness test - Could we test the hardness and place them in order? (with 1 being the softest rock)
The water test/ Permeability - Using droplets of water onto the rocks. Could you decide how permeable the rock is (if it allows water to soak in)?
The acid test - Whilst wearing goggles we dropped white vinegar on each. What happened?

The children were great 'Petrologists' and performed each test, to each rock. They also considered how they can make each scientifically fair.

What did you discover about the hardness and permeability of the rock?
